Anti Internet Explorer Plugin: Multilang-support

I updated my previously mentioned plugins for drupal and wordpress so that it can automatically detect from where a visitor comes and display the info-page in the correct language.

So far the script supports

  1. English
  2. German

  5. Swedish (Thanks to Jim)

Als mir meine Freundin vor ein paar Tagen von einem Bratwürstchen-Banner auf meinem Blog erzählt hat, hab ich mich schon ganz schön gewundert, doch DAS hier setzt dem Ganzen die Krone auf. Ich meine, hey… KARTOFFELN???

Okay, natürlich ist mir klar, dass die Banner nicht von Google selber kommen aber trotzdem: KARTOFFELN????

Anti Internet Explorer 6 Plugin for Wordpress

I made a little plugin for Wordpress that can detect visitors if they are using the Internet Explorer 6 or older. In this case, they would see a message that upgrading their browser or even switch to a different one would be a good idea.

This Plugin follows the idea of the “IE Dead March Project” which wants all webdevelopers to stop supporting the Internet Explorer 6.

For installation instructions, screenshots and download just visit the plugin-site of wordpress.org.

There is also a Drupal6 module available to automate this feature.

Update: There was a critical bug in the old version 1.0 and 1.1.
In order to work properly, the plugin must be updated to version 1.2.
It is recommended to upgrade as soon as possible.
To do so, download the new version and overwrite your old files on your server. That’s it.

Anti-Internet Explorer 6 module for Drupal 6

My roommate Alex developed a little module for Drupal 6 called ie6ban, based on my little code snippet for general websites.

Installation:

  1. Download
  2. Extract and upload to your modules folder
  3. Activate it in the admin control panel.

After succesul installation, all Internet Explorer 6 users should see a warning message instead of the original website.

There is also a Wordpress plugin available to automate this feature.

Stop the ie6

Some days ago, I read about the IE Death March Project, which is a great idea to banish the Internet Explorer 6 from the web, which really gives a lot headache to webdevelopers every day, including myself.
The idea of the project is, that webmasters should stop supporting the ie6 by the end of march 2009.

To support the project, I quickly wrote a little code snippet which can redirect all Internet Explorer 6 – users to an info-page, which explains in short terms, why their browser is so bad. It also gives some information on what these people should do now and how webmasters can help to finally end the life of the ie6.

If you are a Webmaster and you also want to stop developing for the Internet Explorer 6, feel free to insert the code into the <head>…</head> section of your HTML-document and all your visitors, who are still using this ancient browser will be forwarded to my info-page.

There is also a Drupal6 module and a Wordpress plugin available to automate this feature.

A lot of languages are supported. Check this site out for more information on localisation.

Auf’s richtige Pferd gesetzt

Über heise.de bin ich auf riastats.com gelandet, wo man über eine FLEX-Anwendung Statistiken über die Verbreitung von Technologien zur Entwicklung von Rich Internet Applications einsehen kann.

Mich persönlich freut es sehr, dass Flash weiterhin die Nase vor Microsoft’s Silverlight und JavaFX hat, denn die Verbreitung und Erfahrung, die in Adobe’s Platform steckt ist meiner Meinung nach einfach unbezahlbar, während die Konkurenzprodukte von M$ und Sun definitiv (noch) ihre Kinderkrankheiten haben, wenn man das überhaupt noch so bezeichnen kann. Silverlight gibt es inzwischen schon in Version 2 und trotzdem ist die Verbreitung hier eher gering. Interessant dabei: Die Verbreitung des Silverlight Plugins ist bei Firefox-Browsern deutlich größer als beim Internet Explorer. Das deutet darauf hin, dass zur Zeit (noch) viele Entwickler, aber eher wenige Endbenutzer diese Technologie nutzen. Ändern könnte sich dies mit dem neuen Betriebssystem Windows7, dem ich durchaus zutrauen würde, ein Erfolg zu werden. Falls also Microsoft das Silverlight-Plugin bereits im Internet Explorer 8 mitliefert, wird Adobe sicherlich schwer Konkurrenz bekommen.

Maßlos enttäuscht bin ich allerdings von JavaFX. Wie kann man nur eine so weit verbreitete Platform, wie die Java Laufzeitumgebung und den so genialen Aufbau der Java-API dermaßen verhunzen?

  • In JavaFX wird nicht in Java, sondern in einer eigenen Script-Sprache programmiert. Ich habe mir mal ein paar Zeilen davon angesehen und ganz ehrlich: Hübsch ist was anderes.
  • JavaFX Anwendungen laden unglaublich langsam. Ich wollte mir eben ein paar Demos von Sun’s Webseite anschauen. Ich hab’s irgendwann aufgegeben, nachdem der Ladevorgang länger als eine Minute dauerte.
  • Embedded JavaFX Applications nerven Benutzer oft, ein Zertifikat zu akzeptieren. Mag sein, dass das sinnvoll ist, aber es nervt.

Aus diesem Gründen, bin ich ganz froh, möglichst früh auf den FLEX-Zug aufgesprungen zu sein. Sowohl Silverlight, als auch JavaFX stellen, trotz der Macken von Flash, zur Zeit (Meiner Meinung nach) keine Konkurrenz für Adobe’s RIA-Platform dar. Einzig OpenLaszlo könnte hier noch was reissen. Allerdings werde ich das Gefühl nicht los, dass die Laszlo-Jungs hier zu sehr die “guten Jedi-Ritter” im Universum der RIA-Entwickler darstellen und aufgrund der geringen Verbreitung von OL auch dieses schöne OpenSource-Projekt in der Versenkung verschwindet.
